Trump and Japan's New Premier Exchange Compliments and Commit to Reinforce ‘Remarkable’ Relationship

During a latest trip to Tokyo, former US President Donald Trump together with the Japanese new Premier Sanae Takaichi exchanged warm praise and vowed to enhance the already strong bilateral ties.

Highlights from the Encounter

Trump commended Prime Minister Takaichi as a ‘great’ figure and applauded her on assuming the role of Japan's first female premier. In their discussions at Tokyo's official venue, Trump expressed confidence that she would become one of the ‘great prime ministers’ of Japan.

The prime minister, identified as a protégée of former Japanese leader Shinzo Abe, praised his efforts to resolve international conflicts and reportedly vowed to nominate him for the prestigious award.

Economic and Security Agreements

Both nations revealed a series of joint projects in sectors such as energy, artificial intelligence, and rare earths. Japan-based firms are exploring investments of up to $400 billion in the United States.

Furthermore, Japan had previously committed $550bn in strategic US investments, loans, and guarantees as part of an agreement to obtain relief from Trump's tariffs.

Such moves are seen as potentially easing any upcoming requests from the US side for Tokyo to boost its defense spending. The prime minister responded to this by committing to fast-track proposals to raise military budget to two percent of GDP.

Other Political Developments

  • Donald Trump did not rule out to a third term, although it is legally not permitted. He stated he ‘would love’ to serve again but won't use a vice presidential workaround.
  • A Michigan representative Rashida Tlaib reacted to Trump's comments, declaring, “No way in hell we’re going to let that happen.”
  • California Governor Newsom indicated he will decide on a White House bid after the 2026 midterm elections.
  • The leader of the US biggest government employees union demanded an end to the government shutdown, which is now the second longest in American history.
  • House Speaker Mike Johnson blasted Democratic leader Jeffries for endorsing a candidate in the NYC mayoral election.
  • The governor of Indiana Mike Braun announced a legislative meeting to reconsider electoral maps.
  • Opposition leaders in several regions are planning map changes in reaction to GOP efforts.
“Everything I know from Shinzo and others, you will be one of the great prime ministers,” Trump said to Takaichi. “I’d also like to congratulate you on being the first woman prime minister. It’s a big deal,” he added.

This encounter underscores the ongoing importance of the American-Japanese partnership and paves the way for further cooperation on economic, defense, and foreign policy fronts.
